Interview – Caleb Mitchell – IT Support Analyst
Welcome to interview number 12 in this series, where we talk to some of the newer Quorumites about their first six months in role!
Today we’re chatting with Caleb Mitchell an IT Support Analyst in our Managed Service team who works onsite in the IT team of one of our legal clients.
If you missed the last interview with IT Support Analyst, Iain Dunn, you can check that out here.
Tell us a bit about your role?
I’m an IT Analyst and I started off on the main support team and then very quickly, within the first one or two months, moved to on-site to work with one of our law-firm clients that are supported by an in-house team from Quorum, which has been a very good fit for me. I get to focus on that one client and hone the skills that I need for them. I’ve been learning all the new law firm systems that are specific to them, so that’s been challenging, but it’s been good to learn new applications and get to know the client better.
What has it been like working on-site with a client team?
I’ve really enjoyed it, I can put faces to names and build up relationships within the client and I think that makes the client more responsive to us when you’ve built up that level of trust. I prefer building those relationships where you’re not just a faceless person that they raise tickets to, but you’re someone they pass on the way to the coffee machine, they know you by name and they come to you for that face-to-face support. I’ve enjoyed growing my people skills in that way, it’s been fun.
My experience is in working with one client rather than on multiple clients, so this suits my skillset better.
Tell us about any notable moments so far?
The first thing that pops to my mind is my first or second week one of our clients had a VPN issue and it was carnage, to be honest!! This was a client that we usually get a fair amount of tickets for, but I started getting about 100 a day and had people calling with issues constantly, so I was wondering what I’d let myself in for!!
Thankfully, we managed to get that under control and nothing that drastic has happened since!
What advice would you give to anyone interested in joining Quorum?
I’d say that Quorum has a great culture and although it sounds cliché, it really is quite like a family. Everyone is friendly to each other and you can message literally anybody regardless of their level or title, everyone is approachable.
I particularly noticed when we all got together for the AGM, everyone is just so friendly.
Everyone is willing to talk and help you through anything that you’re stuck with. I remember asking so many questions in my first few weeks and there was always someone willing to help. That would be my one bit of advice, ask as many questions as you can, don’t sit and stress through issues yourself, you’ll learn so much more if you ask questions and take note and suddenly you’ve got all of these solutions that you may not have had before.
Tell us about your best bits so far.
I do think that one of my best bits has actually been working in my on-site team. I feel like that transition really suited me and has been good for me. Working with just one client has allowed me to hone my people skills, so it’s been a real highlight for me, especially as I was a bit apprehensive at first. I decided to just take the bull by the horns and it’s turned out so well, it’s been good fun and I’ve enjoyed being part of a smaller team and getting to know them. It’s even closer-knit.
In my previous jobs I wouldn’t have considered my colleagues as friends or family. But in Quorum I genuinely class everybody as friends, I enjoy hanging out with them and that’s been a much more positive experience.
What do you hope to achieve in the next six months?
I’d like to further hone and develop my people skills. I’d like to get involved with more training with the team e.g. lunch and learns with the client and having more of that face-to-face interaction with them. These are skills that I already have that I’d like to develop more as I grow in my role. I like those interactions and how you get different things from different people.
