A Three-Day Insight into Quorum: My Work Experience

There’s a growing skills gap in tech, and we all have a role to play in closing it. We are passionate about giving young people real-world experience and helping out the future workforce that we might rely on!!

Recently, Luke, aged 17, joined us for his work experience placement – here’s what he got up to and what he learned along the way, in his own words.

Over the course of three enlightening days, I undertook work experience with Quorum and had the opportunity to explore the inner workings of the company, gaining valuable insights into its operations, culture, and values.

From HR and marketing to IT and finance, the experience showcased the collaborative spirit and innovative mindset that define Quorum.

I got the opportunity to see how an IT company works and to get some insights into what I might like to study at University through exploring which parts of the business I was most interested in.

Day 1: Understanding the Foundations

The day began with a conversation with HR Manager, Megan, who provided an overview of the HR side of Quorum, including legislation and personal information agreements.

This was followed by a discussion with Marketing Manager, Pam, about the marketing strategies employed at Quorum, such as managing social media, running campaigns, and organising events.

A key takeaway was learning that Quorum is an employee-owned company and how that helps motivation and productivity.

The day ended with a visit to the main service desk, where Service Desk Team Leader, Jessica, explained the omnichannel support system that allows clients to raise tickets via various platforms including the customer portal, email, and phone.

Day 2: Hands-On Technical Experience

On my second day I had the opportunity to visit a Managed Service client and spend the day onsite with them. The day started with assisting Support Analyst, Jack, in upgrading laptops from Windows 10 to Windows 11, which involved replacing RAM to meet the new system requirements.

Post-lunch, the focus shifted to installing sensors in meeting rooms with Service Delivery Manager, Iain, using software to detect room usage in real-time. Iain also talked me through how projects are managed, detailing each stage and its significance.

Day 3: Security, Project Management, and Finance

On day three I was back in Quorum’s headquarters in Edinburgh. First I met Security Consultant, Jamie, who introduced the security protocols at Quorum. He demonstrated how to identify suspicious emails and explained how phishing simulations are used to evaluate the company’s resilience against cyber threats.

The day continued with the Project Management team and I met Head of Project Management, Sharon, and Project Manager, Lewis, who delved into what their team do. Lewis outlined a project and we collaborated on creating a timeline and explaining the necessity of each phase.

In the afternoon, I met with Finance Administrator, Ailidh, who shared insights into the finance department, focussing on daily reporting to track employee hours for client billing.

Conclusion

This three-day journey through Quorum showed me that the most important elements were excellence, employee experience, and client satisfaction.

The experience really showed how much teamwork matters and that nothing would get done without everyone working together. It also gave me a proper look at how Quorum runs as a varied, forward-thinking place where new ideas are always welcome.
